In addition, when deciding on the type of container to choose, the issue of cooperation with foreign shipping companies and cargo owners should also be taken into consideration. Because, in the international multimodal transport of containerized goods, it is very likely that container exchanges and mutual use will be carried out with foreign shipping companies.
In order to adapt to the conditions of road and railway transportation and enable countries and regions with low freight volume and poor transportation conditions to achieve “door-to-door” transportation, the “mother and child container” transportation method can be adopted. The mother and child container transportation method refers to the fact that the size of the child container should closely match that of the mother container. In sea transportation, large international standard containers can be used, while in inland transportation, small containers are adopted. Once the container transportation in these countries and regions matures and the volume of freight increases, the “door-to-door” transportation of large containers will be gradually improved.
In addition, on some shipping routes, due to the imbalance of cargo sources between the two ports, a large number of containers are transported back empty. This not only reduces the economic benefits of container transportation, but in severe cases, it can also affect the development of container transportation. To address the issue of empty container return transportation, some shipping companies in certain countries use folding containers on routes with unbalanced cargo sources. When folded, the volume of this type of container is only one fourth of that of a fixed container. That is to say, when four containers are folded and stacked together, they have the volume of a fixed international standard container. This method can significantly reduce the cargo capacity loss during the return transportation of empty containers.
